The Underland Chronicles
The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins
The Underland is terrorized by rats who seek to exterminate the mice of the Underland (in a manner akin to Hitler exterminating the Jews during WWII). Gregor is called on to save the Underland and all its inhabitants – humans, bats, roaches, spiders, and mice. There is only one problem – Gregor is a 12 year old boy living in present day New York and has no desire to be the Underland’s Warrior. He doesn’t even like fighting! To make matters worse, he has enough problems in New York. His father is gone; his family is poor; and now, he has to save the Underland?
The Underland Chronicles tells the tale of a young boy named Gregor and has adventures in the Underland. Through his adventures in the Underland, Gregor learns the value of hope and exhibits traits that all people should aspire to – courage, love, and humility. The first book is great for all ages, but the 2-5 book may be a little to violent for younger readers. My 8 and 10 year old sisters quit listening to it with me (I listened to the audio book), but my 13 year old sister loved it, as do I.
